Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
