Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
