An Prediction Market Participant Profited $436,000 from Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Political Attention Grows
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
